I began this research by developing ideas around the concept that the body = home. With references ranging from cocoons, shells and eggs to tents, towers and houses, I collaborated with artist and fashion designer, Jawara Alleyne, to create a number of experimental totemic structures which sit between costume, prop and building. Transforming the seaside into a stage, they are awkwardly worn, transportable, transformable and undefinable objects which conjure up a DIY theatrical Grecian dreamscape. While the process of creating these objects and images was intended as a starting point for ideas I’d like to develop in future, larger works, the images create a strong visual narrative; I imagine a beautiful warrior crawling from the sea, undergoing a therianthropic transformation into a Hermit Crab-Man beast whose form feels both domesticated and wild.
