Artist Statement

My work focuses on the individual as well as their contextualisation within the fabric of society. Specifically, it is concerned with aspects such as the relationship between psyche and body, the dynamics of roles and the analysis and creation of archetypal figures. My work, which is also influenced by the topics of modern disciplines like sociology, surgery and psychology, brings together a conceptual approach and a figurative language. In some cases this language may be reminiscent of classic models for its realism, in others, it may be more stylised and humorous. In the former cases, its juxtaposition to the contemporariness of the approach, means to create an effective oxymoron; in the latter ones, a coherent complementarity. Through my iconography, I seek to reflect on life, the life of men and women, attempting to render the affair of being a human. In that respect, bodies, psyches, roles and archetypal figures in my pictures become a means for me to speak of my interpretation of that affair. The result is a depiction of characters and scenes, in most cases with an intrinsic narrative component and an unreal feel to them. At times this is playful, at others more philosophical; in any case, always with a degree of ambiguity.
