Artist Statement

Anthropologists view the middle stage of rites of passage as a liminal period between one state and another. Here the subject simultaneously contains elements of both its previous and subsequent forms but is identified as neither. I am interested in creating an installation that is concurrently destructive and constructive. I do this by using materials that are either offcuts, found or second hand and then deconstruct them to reconstruct them into a different form. During rites of passage there is an internal, immediate change in status, whereas the external appearance initially remains the same and develops at a slower pace. Similarly, in my practice I replicate this significant and opposing relationship between the interior and exterior by only burning the underside of the materials. This action not only ruins the integrity of the wood, enabling some pre-selected pieces to intentionally break, but it is also symbolic of change, cleansing and rebirth into something new.
