Artist Statement

Liam Jolly is an artist based in Redruth, Cornwall. Working in paint, film, sound, installation and performance, he also uses webpages and platforms such as Instagram as tools to explore ambiguities in meaning between fiction and reality, and the space where one thing becomes another.

Grids, words, dots and marks, mapped minimally across surfaces on and offline, resonate from rhythms and patterns identified in found material or related works. A football match and a grid of black paint scrawled on canvas may appear unrelated, but the latter only exists by executing each mark in time to a drum beat that was generated by the game, itself staged only as a mechanism to remix an existing beat, the Amen Break, famed for being the most remixed drum part in history, and so on.

Moving freely between ideas, works and gestures he creates a repeating system of motifs that fill physical and abstract space, but jolt with a deceiving simplicity. In denying any form of conclusiveness, his works ask when something is considered to be an art work and when it is not, and where our experience of it starts and ends.
