Mellor’s painting practice is concerned with states of flux and impermanence. Recent expeditions to Patagonia and Iceland have furthered her research into spatial and temporal concerns in a comparison of geological and urban timeframes.
Her process-led, abstract painting practice employs a tempered gestural language where fluidity is a defining material concern and the process of erasure has equal importance to the intuitive application of paint. This examines states of presence and remembrance by exploring a tension between control and chance.
Mellor draws an analogy between the materials she uses and natural processes of erosion and sedimentation in the landscape. Her comparison of speeds from gradual to instantaneous considers a personal pace within the context of organic and industrial action.
Minimal compositions emphasise a sensitivity to the passing moment, displaying a direct and binary visual language where a single action is used. This clearly demonstrates the physical act of painting and creates an anchored and embodied viewing experience.
In contrast, the repetitive and reductive actions used in more complex systems of mark-making, create an out-of-focus aesthetic intended to activate a viewer’s perception. This is also seen in the Blind Light series where the use of light as a medium was informed by shifting climatic conditions in Iceland. The physical removal of paint here, intends to challenge the fixity of a gesture, exploring a boundary between temporal and physical layering.
